Stephen Nicholas says:

Maybe you should use the right terms from the start?

Sketch = Idea (a sketching is a term for what you are always doing from the
start and has nothing to do with the idea or concept)!,
Missed one very important one = Perspective
Measurements = referred to as Proportions,
Mass/form = comes in with proportions yet is naturally only evident when
dealing with a light source.
so.. Light/shadow = Mass/form,

I correct you here, only because I be-leave it is important to teach people
correctly from the start, otherwise it becomes misleading and
hard to follow. Having a firm understanding of perspective is the key to
every aspect of a study right from the start.

*The truth has been spkoen*

But seriously, most of the time I rushed and combines all of these stages.
That explains why some of my drawings look robotic even tho the proportions
were alright. Thanks man :^)
Great advice as always

How does one sharpen a pencil to that extent, like in the beginnign of the
video? Is there a special pencil sharpener, or do you use like a knife or
something?

Thank you for this tutorial, Alphonso- it is very helpful to me at this
stage ’cause I’ve seen a bunch of things you do while drawing (gestural
sketching, visual measuring, construction…) but I have no idea how to put
them together in an effective way yet. 😛 But I’m learning, and your videos
help!

You sharpen your pencils with a knife, right? I’m still trying to get used
to that- at first, I really chewed up my pencils, but I found that a knife
can make a pencil much sharper than an ordinary sharpener and exposes more
of the lead for shading.

I’ve been enlightened.

Samuel Gallagher says:

– Drawing is not a mechanical process
– Illustrated Steps are reference points and overarching ideas to keep
in mind
– You don’t complete each drawing one step at a time, there is no formula
– You work on the entire drawing with your overarching steps in mind,
working on each step at the same time

Grachelle Ann Abadilla says:

learned over the years and gave me some hope. Gonna try something tomorrow

Laura1st says:

Please, please please help me …. Regarding the measurment (I am having
big troubles with it) – so I look for the proportions how they are to each
other, like you said like the lenght to width, or like the head in
comparation to other bodyparts – here my question – Do we have to do this
when we dont want to draw the model 1:1 in proportions because we want it
bigger or smaller? How about if I want to draw from a picture 1:1, do I
still have to compare the bodyparts to each other? At the moment I dont do
this, I just measure the parts each for its own, because I want to be my
drawing to be exactly like the picture, so I dont have to compare the
different parts to each other. Is that correct? Please answer me, I am a
beginner, and it is so hard to go on…this is the biggest problem I have
right now. Sorry for my bad English. Thank you so much for all your videos!
